RON 95 long term test

Hi all readers,

This is a hot debate as RON 97 petrol is nearly 90 cents more per litre than RON 95 in Malaysia. So, filling up the 70 litres tank of most Renault can have a big impact in our wallets.

Ok, I have consistently used RON 95 on all my cars and "downgrade" from RON 97 to 95 for the Renault Espace III 16v since 8 months ago. The manual said ok to use RON 95 fuel. It is actually ok but some disadvantages of RON 95 are

  • less power
  • a little rougher/less smooth engine (slightly)
  • a little jerk sometimes during gear change (auto gearbox) maybe due to less power
  • push more especially when more load or climbing

So, if you wish to maintain the RON 95, some of the advise you can consider are:

  • put fuel injector cleaner (to make sure the system operates optimum level)
  • put some "octane booster" additives that may can help to improve the power

If you have the extra budget, just use RON 97. It is a much better fuel than RON 95.

  1. Hi Zikri
First of all very useful blog for us renault car owners. i recently bought a renault kangoo 1.4 manual year 2006/2007 with only 20,000+ kms used. the car has had starting problems since 2 months ago. First changed to new battery as suspected it was flat battery that the car would not start. then a few weeks after that, car would not start again, and called one of the mechanic nearby my house. initially he said it was the starter that was faulty and need to be replaced. cost RM 800-900. but fortunately, later on with further checking, he said some wires loose and no need to change the starter. still he charged me RM290 for solving the problem.
then last week, car did not start again, no cranking at all. this time called Renault service center, service advisor told me from the description of the problem and since the battery was new, the fault is with the alternator. cost of replacement RM900 for a original new alternator from renault. COntrary to what i had read in car forum, the original new alternator for a renault kangoo cost RM1400.
SO i am a bit worried about whether i will be getting an original alternator since the price quoted was RM900.
would any renault kangoo owners be able to comment and help me ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ken
