Frequently Asked Questions about RENAULT OWNERSHIP IN MALAYSIA

Many questions arises from many people regards to Renault ownership in Malaysia, but most of it concerned about RELIABILITY and MAINTENANCE COST are the two most asked about.

Therefore, I hope in this simple blog, I can set the answer straight and through my many years of owning and driving several Renault models in Malaysia (7-9 models in 10 years); and through our information shared with other Renault users and Renault mechanics in Malaysia & Singapore.

MODELS
In Malaysia, we do not have many choices. All models are CBU (Fully Imported) except the RENAULT 19 ( in  1993-1995), CKD - locally assembled by Federal Auto (then the franchise holder of Renault in Malaysia). So I will try to categorize them by models due to some differences in some aspects such as PRICE, COSTS, MAINTENANCE, WHAT TO LOOK FOR, COMMON PROBLEMS, etc.

GENERAL
Renault in Malaysia has the reputation of being expensive to own and maintain. I can say partly true but parts prices and maintenance costs have been significantly reduced lately (due to reduction in parts prices due to higher demand). In general, most Renault owners send their vehicles to "Renault expert workshops". There are about 3 in Klang Valley (1 in Puchong, 1 in USJ1, 1 in Subang Bestari), 1 in Prai and 1 in JB. Other places may got but we are not sure. Most of this mechanics are ex Renault mechanics previously who have many years of experience in the mechanical and electronic aspects of the vehicles.

In terms of maintenance costs, if you can budget about RM4000-5000 per annum, should be ok. This is for unexpected maintenance. For scheduled maintenance, most models do have quite the same costings, as per below for reference :

every 10,000km
- Lube Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter) - about RM200-300 (semi synthetic)
every 30,000km
- Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, Check brake, spark plug, beltings) - about RM300-400
every 60,000km
- Major Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, brake, spark plug, fuel/petrol filter, Timing Belt, Timing Tensioner, Timing Bearing, Alternator Belt) - about RM1500-2000

In general, if you wanna buy a used Renault, get a good one, well maintained by Renault workshops or Renault expertise workshops. It depends on what you want actually. If you prefer comfort and safety (and can set RM4-5K/year and the unexpected maintenance), Renault will fit you well. But if you cannot bear the costs and/or the unexpected maintenance, other models may suit you better. Actually, most models have good "value for money".

So, please browse by models for more information.

RENAULT 19 TXE (Carburetor)
RENAULT 19 RT 1.7i & 1.8i

GENERAL
This is a car I called SO-SO. Nearly everything is so-so, from handling, ride, reliability, handling, design, etc. As the car is >15 years nowadays, maybe only less than 50% still on the road. Avoid the R19 TXE version as it is unreliable track-record can make you faint. The R19 RT 1.8i Manual is the best model all rounder, although not as good as other Renault models. This model is said to be ROBUST and DURABLE in Europe but in Malaysia, it is otherwise. Maybe because it is locally assembled with some local parts, or because of other issues (such as plastic quality, engine design, anti-rust, etc), we are not sure.

RIDE & HANDLING
Ride is more on firmer side especially after many years of usage. Change new bushes, suspension joints can help to improve the ride but still not as smooth as the newer Renault models. However, it is much better than most Malaysian cars and Japanese cars. If some wobble or vibration after 100 km/h, check the tyre balancing, suspension & steering bushes, and it should be ok.

Handling is neutral here, not sporty nor too comfort. Best of both worlds. You can still get a god smile at "jalan kampung" and some corners. But make sure all the bushes, suspension in good health.. coz the steering rack tends to go "kaput" quite easily.. and it is dangerous.

MAINTENANCE COSTS
In general, you should budget about RM4000-5000 per year for routine maintenance and unexpected maintenance. Service interval is every 10,000 km. In general, you can follow this simple routine

every 10,000km
- Lube Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter) - about RM200-300 (semi synthetic)
every 30,000km
- Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, Check brake, spark plug, beltings) - about RM300-400
every 60,000km
- Major Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, brake, spark plug, fuel/petrol filter, Timing Belt, Timing Tensioner, Timing Bearing, Alternator Belt) - about RM1500-2000

Due to its famous reputation and its age, you should set a budget AND expect about RM4000-5000 of unexpected maintenance..

THE COMMON PROBLEMS
- Dashboard (cracked & rattle after 5-7 years) - me, changed to CIVIC EG9 costs about RM1000 + labor
- Steering rack failure or leak (costs about RM3500 for new one, used about RM500)
- alternator, cooling system (hose, radiators) prone to failure
- auto gearbox (4-5 years life, costs about RM5000 to repair.. ouch). Manual gbox is ok & durable.
- others

OWNERSHIP COST
Let say if your mileage per year about 20,000km, so

Cost of maintenance per year RM4000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM700
Cost of Scheduled Maintenance RM300
COST PER YEAR RM5000
COST PER 3 YEARS RM15,000

PRICE OF CAR (used R19 1995)  RM8000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 3 YEARS RM15,000

TOTAL COST FOR 3 YEARS = 23,000
or RM638/month.

RENAULT MEGANE HATHCBACK 1.6i (1996-1998)
RENAULT MEGANE CLASSIC 1.6i (1996-1998)

RENAULT MEGANE SCENIC 1.6i (1996-1999)

GENERAL
All this 3 models has made Renault top of the chart in Europe and UK (and record sales in Malaysia) but the 1998 economic turmoil hampered it sales. All models from now is CBU (Completely Built Up) or FULLY IMPORTED laa.. Quasar Carriage Sdn Bhd, the franchise holder for Renault in Malaysia brought these models to Malaysia from 1996. All models do share many components, from chassis, gearbox, engine, suspension (except for Scenic which has higher bodyshell and seating arrangement of mini-MPV its famous for). As expected, Scenic is the most famous and sold very well. All models have suprisingly good ride & handling for its class, new concept of mini MPV for small families, versatility and practicality never seems to heard of before. In Malaysia, all these models also is quite durable, well made, reliable and practical in daily usage. Although the reliability record cannot match the Japanese, it is significantly better than Renault previous models.

RIDE & HANDLING
Ride is more on comfort for all models especially the Scenic. The Megane HB & Classic, have famous ride & handling balance which is loved by most of its owners. You can ride in town and long distance driving and still feeling freshed.

Handling is neutral here, with the Scenic being more comfort biased ; while the Classic & HB is the more sportier version. I would recommend owners to use good tyres such as Michelin XM1 or Bridgestone Turanza for the good balance of ride and handling. Other models are also ok but from our experience, those two tyres really stand above the others.

As its engine only 8v, the engine may sounds "not nice" and some booming may creep after 120kmh. It will sound ok when you reach 135-140kmh... funny, but that's the way the engine works. It will run out of breathe when it reaches 170 kmh-185kmh, depends on your gearbox. It sound sweet around 80-100kmh.

MAINTENANCE COSTS
In general, you should budget about RM4000-5000 per year for routine maintenance and unexpected maintenance. Service interval is every 10,000 km. In general, you can follow this simple routine

every 10,000km
- Lube Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter) - about RM200-300 (semi synthetic)
every 30,000km
- Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, Check brake, spark plug, beltings) - about RM300-400
every 60,000km
- Major Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, brake, spark plug, fuel/petrol filter, Timing Belt, Timing Tensioner, Timing Bearing, Alternator Belt) - about RM1500-2000

This model has a reputation of being the durable workhorse. So, use it frequently and it should be ok. If you seldom use it, there are bigger possibilities it will breakdown more frequently... believe me!

THE COMMON PROBLEMS
- Auto Gearbox ia quite robust but will "kaput" in 6-7 years (about 200,000km +)
- Others is quite normal wear & tear

OWNERSHIP COST
Let say if your mileage per year about 20,000km, so

Cost of maintenance per year RM3000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM700
Cost of Scheduled Maintenance RM300
COST PER YEAR RM4000
COST PER 3 YEARS RM12,000

PRICE OF CAR (used 1997-98)  RM16000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 3 YEARS RM12,000

TOTAL COST FOR 3 YEARS = RM31,000 or RM777/month

RENAULT LAGUNA 1.8RT
RENAULT LAGUNA 2.0 RT & RXE
RENAULT LAGUNA 3.0 v6 RXE

GENERAL
Laguna has been famous in UK & Europe for its comfort and long distance driving. It is also quite reliable & durable if well maintained. However, due to its small number in Malaysia (<100 units), the maintenance costs have been quite expensive as some of its parts need special order.

Models you should go for is the 2.0i Manual RXE, with many extras such as climate control, voice reminder (synthesizer), etc. The 1.8i Manual is a little bit underpower as Laguna is not a light car. The 3.0v6 (auto) is the model you may want to avoid. It drinks petrol like no ones business and quite a pain to maintain. A good unit should costs about RM12-15K nowadays. It is brought in Malaysia from end 1996 to 1997 only. Due to its unpopular here, the importer (Quasar Carriage) stopped importing it and they concentrate on the Megane Scenic as the best selling model here.

As age creeping up (most models around 14 years old), more maintenance costs should be set aside. RM5000-7000 per annum is quite a conservative budget for a tip top vehicle. ( the original brake discs (Brembo) for Renault Laguna RXE will costs you RM4000 for 4 pieces.. ouchhh)

RIDE & HANDLING
Ride is more on comfort for all models. You can ride in town and long distance driving and still feeling freshed. Handling is more comfort biased, so cornering it is not what it is made for. But it still handles confident although you can feel the body movement. I would recommend owners to use good tyres such as Michelin XM1 or Bridgestone Turanza for the good balance of ride and handling. Other models are also ok but from our experience, those two tyres really stand above the others.

The engine for 2.0 and 1.8 is only about 115 bhp and 95 bhp originally (when its new!). So, the engine may out-of -puff at high speed now.

In general, you should budget about RM6000-7000 per year for routine maintenance and unexpected maintenance.

If you seldom use it, there are bigger possibilities it will breakdown more frequently... believe me! engine is actually quite the same as the 8v Renault Espace, so ok. But the other parts may need sourcing from UK and France due to its limited units here.

THE COMMON PROBLEMS
- Auto Gearbox ia quite robust but will "kaput" in 6-7 years (about 200,000km +)
- aircond cooling coil 4-5 years once (about RM1500)
- drive shaft every 3-5 years ( about RM2500)
- bushes & mountings (all-in about RM4500) every 4 years
- wheel bearings front & rear ( set - RM3200)
- Others is quite normal wear & tear

OWNERSHIP COST
Let say if your mileage per year about 20,000km, so

Cost of maintenance per year RM6000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM700
Cost of Scheduled Maintenance RM300
COST PER YEAR RM7000
COST PER 3 YEARS RM21,000

PRICE OF CAR (used 2.0 1997-98)  RM14000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 3 YEARS RM21,000

TOTAL COST FOR 3 YEARS = RM35,000 or RM972/month

RENAULT ESPACE 2.0 RXE 8v(auto) 1998-2000
RENAULT ESPACE 3.0V6 (a) 1998-2000
RENAULT ESPACE or Grand Espace 2.0 16v (a) 2001-2004

Espace III is the majority model
in Malaysia

GENERAL
Renault Espace is known as KING OF MPV and also known as the premium MPV in Europe (but not in Malaysia). The word PREMIUM means that the maintenance also PREMIUM lah.. also the ride comfort.

The model in the picture is also known as Espace III. Most 1998-2000 model are only available in 2 versions, the 2.0 8v (auto) with 115bhp and the 3.0v6 12v (auto) which sells very few. Both the models are so similar that only several extras in the 3.0v6 that tells them apart. The post 2001 is the 16v models with 140bhp. Also looks quite similar (except for the gear lever is on the floor for 16v, on the dashboard for 8v), clear lamp for 16v and also the introduction of Grand Espace (which is longer about 11 inches than the standard version).

Note : There are some earlier version, Espace II sold in Malaysia but in small numbers, so maintenance is very hard as parts are hard to source.

Photo : from right to left : Espace IV (2006 till now), Espace I , Espace II(1994-1997), Espace III (1998-2004)

RIDE & HANDLING
All Espace models have superior comfort and ride that made it so famous. Most Espace owners will upgrade to a newer version of Espace normally. It has one of the best ride in the market and among most MPVs. Compare it to any Japanese MPV (such as Toyota Alphard, Estima, Nissan Elgrand), Renault Espace will win the ride comfort quite easily. Long distance driving is its trump card with its near magic carpet ride on most roads.

Handling is not its main advantage but it will drive neutrally among "kampung roads". As the vehicle is very comfort biased, cornering may introduce some body rolls. Cruising at 110kmh - 140 kmh is done very easily and the occupants and the driver may not realize it. The 16v may has better insulation and torque due to more valves and higher BHP output, but in normal highway road, it will easily soak up miles after miles. However, going uphills (like Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands) may stress the vehicle due to its relatively small engine (115 bhp & 140 bhp) and auto gearbox.

MAINTENANCE COSTS
In general, you should budget about RM5000-6000 per year for routine maintenance and unexpected maintenance. Service interval is every 10,000 km. In general, you can follow this simple routine

every 10,000km
- Lube Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter) - about RM200-300 (semi synthetic)
every 30,000km
- Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, Check brake, spark plug, beltings) - about RM300-400
every 60,000km
- Major Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, brake, spark plug, fuel/petrol filter, Timing Belt, Timing Tensioner, Timing Bearing, Alternator Belt) - about RM1500-2000

It can be a workhorse if you maintain it well and use it regularly. However, there are also cases where units that is not use regularly and not well maintained, costs a bomb to maintain or repair. Due to its premium placement in Renault range, parts price can be from reasonable to damn expensive.

from right : Espace I (87-94),  Espace II (94-97), III (98-02),
IV (2003 till now, due for replacement)
THE COMMON PROBLEMS
- Auto Gearbox is ok but  will "kaput" in 6-7 years (about 200,000km +) about RM5000 to repair
- dashboard every 8-10 years (about RM1500)
- drive shaft every 3-5 years ( about RM2500)
- bushes & mountings (all-in about RM4500) every 4 years
- wheel bearings front & rear ( set - RM3200)
- absorber original (front & rear) every 4-5 years, about RM700/pc front, RM550/pc front (OEM also got, about 40% cheaper but only lasts about 2-3 years and dont feel as good as original)
- Acond Cooling coil, every 4-5 years (about RM1800) bcoz need to dismantle dashboard
- aircond compressor about 5-6 years (RM1200-2000/unit), starter motor, alternator (all RM1XXX).. can get the recond units at about RM300+ but normally recond can lasts about 2-3 years.
- gearbox sensor, speed sensor, many other sensors that may need change every 7-8 years once, about RM200-400 / sensor.
- It has no REAR aircond duct, and solely rely on the front aircond. It may take some time (about 5-10 minutes) to cool down the 3rd row especially in sunny days, so it is a challenge. At night or non sunny days, it just works wonderful.

OWNERSHIP COST
Let say if your mileage per year about 20,000km, so

Cost of maintenance per year RM6000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM700
Cost of Scheduled Maintenance RM300
COST PER YEAR RM7000
COST PER 3 YEARS RM21,000

PRICE OF CAR (used 2.0 98-99)  RM28000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 3 YEARS RM21,000

TOTAL COST FOR 3 YEARS = RM49,000 or RM1361/month

Fuel consumption is reasonable, about 9km/lt (town) and 12km/lt (long distance). However, it can be said a BETTER VALUE FOR MONEY if compared to a Japanese MPV nowadays. Let do some maths :

RENAULT GRAND ESPACE 2.0 16v 2004
vs TOYOTA ESTIMA 2.4a 2004

Let say if your mileage per year about 20,000km, so

RENAULT GRAND ESPACE 2004 (about RM52,000 now)
Cost of scheduled maintenance (2 x RM250) = RM500
Cost of unexpected maintenance per year RM6000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM1000
MAINTENANCE COST PER YEAR RM7500

MAINTENANCE COST PER 5 YEARS RM,000

PRICE OF CAR (used 2004)  RM45,000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 5 YEARS RM37,500

TOTAL COST FOR 5 YEARS = RM82,500 or RM1375/month

TOYOTA ESTIMA 2.4 AERAS 2004 (about RM125,000 now)
Cost of scheduled maintenance (2 x RM250) = RM500
Cost of unexpected maintenance per year RM2000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM1500
MAINTENANCE COST PER YEAR RM400

MAINTENANCE COST PER 5 YEARS RM20,000

PRICE OF CAR (used 2006)  RM125,000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 5 YEARS RM20,000

TOTAL COST FOR 5 YEARS = RM145,000 or RM2416/month

Therefore, the Renault Espace is MORE VALUE FOR MONEY. However, it may not be as reliable as the Japanese MPV, owner have to expect unexpected things to happen laa... if you are ok with that, the Espace is one of the BEST MPV in the market.

RENAULT SCENIC 1.6 16v & 2.0 16v (2000 - 2004)
RENAULT SCENIC II & GRAND SCENIC (2005- now)

GENERAL
This is a model that sells very well in Malaysia and worldwide. Most models was the 1.6 16v with 110 bhp in end year 1999 and later joined by the 2.0 16v 140 bhp in year 2002. The 1.6 sold in big numbers, about >500 units in Malaysia. All models were CBU (fully imported).

Then the SCENIC II came to Malaysia in 2 versions, the standard 5 seater and the Grand Scenic, 5+2 seater in 2005. This model was said to be replaced soon, whether this year or next year, we have no news yet.

However, this model is not without its own issue such as the auto gearbox tends to be jerky and not confused to select which gear, the crankshaft pulley which if not well maintained and checked, can prematurely wear and seized, causing the engine to go kaput! and other issues that will be listed later. However, it is a lovely car with comfort and safety in its mind that will make the owner happy (when it did not sick la). It have very good fuel consumption, comfortable mini MPV with its individual rear seats that can be recline and take out if you want to , to create more space at the back.

RIDE & HANDLING
A very comfortable car (not a car actually, it is a Mini MPV) with its 5 seater configuration. I would recommend owners to use good tyres such as Michelin XM1 or Bridgestone Turanza for the good balance of ride and handling. Other models are also ok but from our experience, those two tyres really stand above the others.

The ride in SCENIC II is on the firmer side compared to the earlier model, however this helps better handling. You can feel the firmness even on our highway.

The 16v engine sound ok when you reach 135-140kmh. It will run out of breathe when it reaches 170 kmh-185kmh, depends on your gearbox. It sound sweet around 80-100kmh.
Handling is not its main advantage but it will drive neutrally among "kampung roads". As the vehicle is very comfort biased, cornering may introduce some body rolls. Cruising at 110kmh - 140 kmh is done very easily and the occupants and the driver may not realize it. However, going uphills (like Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands) may stress the vehicle due to its relatively small engine (115 bhp & 140 bhp) and auto gearbox.

The 2.0 16v engine have nearly the same feel in term of torque and power compared to the 1.6 engine but have better reserve power in higher speed.

MAINTENANCE COSTS
In general, you should budget about RM4000-5000 per year for routine maintenance and unexpected maintenance. Service interval is every 10,000 km. In general, you can follow this simple routine

every 10,000km
- Lube Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter) - about RM200-300 (semi synthetic)
every 30,000km
- Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, Check brake, spark plug, beltings) - about RM300-400
every 60,000km
- Major Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, brake, spark plug, fuel/petrol filter, Timing Belt, Timing Tensioner, Timing Bearing, Alternator Belt) - about RM1500-2000

THE COMMON PROBLEMS
- Auto Gearbox is ok but  will "kaput" in 6-7 years (about 200,000km +) about RM5000 to repair
- aircond compressor, every 3-4 years (about RM2500-3500)
- camshaft pulley and waterpump need to change every 60,000km (about RM1200)
- power window regulator kaput 2-3 years (about RM1100 per pc)
- ignition coil every 3-5 years (about RM1200 per set)
- flywheel sensor every year (about RM100)

OWNERSHIP COST
Let say if your mileage per year about 20,000km, so

Cost of maintenance per year RM5000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM700
Cost of Scheduled Maintenance RM500
COST PER YEAR RM6200
COST PER 3 YEARS RM18,600

PRICE OF CAR (used 1.6 2002)  RM28000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 3 YEARS RM18,600

TOTAL COST FOR 3 YEARS = RM46,600 or RM1294/month

RENAULT KANGOO 1.4m & auto Mk1 (2001-2004)
RENAULT KANGOO 1.4 auto MkII (2005 till now)

GENERAL
Renault Kangoo is a fun, multi function and durable workhorse. It is generally the most economical to run in Renault stable, less demanding to the owner and can carry big loads while still smiling (just look at its face!!) It was brought in by the previous importer; Quasar Carriage in 2001 and firstly, did not sell well due to its funny looking body and cheeky looks!! people will stare or laugh at the car! look like a Doraemon car la, bread van la, cartoon car la!! haiyaa... it was fully imported in 2 versions, the manual & auto gearbox. but when the new franchise holder (TC Euro), they brought in the Kangoo Mark II with more smarter inage and less cartoonish and locally assembled it in their Sentul Tan Chong assembly factory, it sells quite well.

RIDE & HANDLING
Compared it to its rival, which is none (previously there was Citroen Berlingo but now the new importer did not bring it), so the nearest rival is Toyota Avanza, it rides very well, very behaved and got all the basic RENAULT DNA in its hand. The ride is comfortable and civilised, on Mark I & Mark II versions. It may have less comfort than let say a Renault Espace, but if someone from a Proton Wira or a Perodua Myvi drive this, prepare for a shock! It drives much better than all those models mentioned (Avanza included).
  • The main trump card is LOAD CAPACITY.
  • It has high roof, so a small fridge, or a motorcycle can fir easily.
  • It also has flat floor with hard plastic covering for durability.
  • It can seat seven people ( 5 adults & 2 small kids at the last row) for the 7 seater options.
  • You can drive in town, long distance easily.
  • In & out of car very neutral, no need to climb or go lower... just nice especially for older people.

It has a relatively basic engine (so minimum maintenance), a 1.4 i 8v engine with not much power but enough grunt to pull the vehicle and its load as requested.  Handling is basic but still fun and stable for this kind of car (do not expect it to handle like a go-kart laaa). Sound insulation is basic but still very acceptable at most legal speed. Some booming of engine may be heard above 130 kmh but 80-120kmh is handled easily.

MAINTENANCE COSTS
In general, you should budget about RM3000 per year for routine maintenance and unexpected maintenance. Service interval is every 10,000 km. In general, you can follow this simple routine

every 10,000km
- Lube Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter) - about RM150 (semi synthetic)
every 30,000km
- Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, Check brake, spark plug, beltings) - about RM200
every 60,000km
- Major Service (Engine Oil 5lt, Oil Filter, brake, spark plug, fuel/petrol filter, Timing Belt, Timing Tensioner, Timing Bearing, Alternator Belt) - about RM1200

This model has a reputation of being the durable workhorse. So, use it frequently and it should be ok. If you seldom use it, there are bigger possibilities it will breakdown more frequently... believe me! parts are many and prices are quite competitive (but generally still more expensive than a Malaysian car)

THE COMMON PROBLEMS
  • Auto Gearbox confusing at low speed
  • Hard to start due to flywheel sensor (every 2-3 yrs) RM100
  • Ignition Coil ( every 4-5 yrs ) RM450
  • Rear wheel bearing (per 2 sets left right) RM900 - if usual overloads
  • Others is quite normal wear & tear

OWNERSHIP COST
Let say if your mileage per year about 20,000km, so

Cost of maintenance per year RM3000 (Budget)
Cost of Insurance & R.Tax  RM700
Cost of Scheduled Maintenance RM300
MAINTENANCE COST PER YEAR RM4000

PRICE OF CAR (used 2005)  RM30,000
+ MAINTENANCE COST FOR 5 YEARS RM20,000

TOTAL COST FOR 5 YEARS = RM50,000 or RM833/month

OTHER MODELS in Malaysia
Lately the importer, TC EURO has brought in several exciting models; but with our tax structure, most cars has quite high selling prices. Most of the models won many awards internationally and even locally, but price are the main challenging factors in Malaysia (also the depreciation rate).

RENAULT Grand Espace IV 2.0t (a).
Nearly RM300K. Not many sold here. They stop
selling it now. maybe wait for new replacement model

RENAULT MEGANE R26. Superb hot hatch!
RENAULT MEGANE R26 F1 230
With its turbocharged 230 bhp, front trick differential, and superb chassis, tuned and assembled by Renaultsport.. no wonder it wins many awards all over the world. Priced at RM230K, it sold less than 25 units here, due to limited numbers (the demand is so high in Europe especially in UK). Not sold anymore. The replacement has came in end 2010; the Megane RS250. Drive this! You will dream about it!! I do.. he he he

RENAULT CLIO RS 2.0
This is a hot hatch that won as many or maybe more awards than the legendary R26 above. The 2.0 engine is non turbo but the combination of revvy engine, direct steering, superb suspension & chassis makes it the best hot hatch in town. for RM190K.. superb buy!

MEGANE CC 2.0 (Auto)
A Megane with a metal folding roof. Not much fun but ok if weather permitted la. Selling at RM190K when new. Now used can get around RM130-100K for 2-3 yrs old.

RENAULT KOLEOS 2.5a CVT
an SUV with the engine & transmission from NISSAN XTRAIL II (2.5i CVT). Priced at a premium RM215K, chassis and suspension is from Renault. Combination best of both world, launched in Malaysia on 13th March 2010.

Renault Laguna Coupe. Beautiful. Lovely.
Read about it here
The Megane RS250. Superbly better than R26.
Waiting lists now even in Malaysia.
Still very rare. And beats other hot hatches!

  5. Things are not looking good for Renault in M'sia. There is a sort-of import restriction imposed by the government on CBU cars which reduces renault's model portfolios restricting them to Koleos and Fluence only.
Unless Renault can come to an agreement to built CKD models, we can kiss good bye to those fantastic range of models enjoyed in the Europe. Shame really.

  10. Just bought a 2004 Scenic II 2.0A. The car (oh it is not a car you say, it's a mini MPV; I agree) has done 100680km when I took it, now I have driven it to 103130km since 11 Nov. I couldn't leave it alone. Condition not bad and it's a good drive even compared with my 2010 Honda City. Took it to Ipoh (for work) 3 times and drove fairly comfortable at 140km/h

I was pretty decided for a Scenic and inspected 4 units and got glued to this one for RM29,000. Used to ride in a LO47, so they family has become fond of the high seating position.

I understand RenauTech at USJ1 services the car and timing belt has been changed. I have less issues to focus. It sounds like the engine or gearbox mounting needs some work and some front bushes maybe. Greasing is a must on next service; some sqeaking sound from undercarriage is irritating. It needs new set of tires. Gear shift is a little erratic, but I suppose I got to get used to it.

Consumption not too bad at 9.1L/100km on the highway and about 11L/100km in the city. I have been asked why a Renault and I go why not ? It is a fine drive and I cannot ask for more for what I paid for.

    orangair..

  13. Is anyone in the market for a 2002 Scenic? 1.6L 16 v
124,000 km, asking rm22K, but negotiable. I know that these cars have a devoted following, but are not widely popular in M'sia.

  15. I am seriously considering a secomd hand kangoo 7 seater,i like biking and looking tomupgrade from my kelisa to a car that can fit a folded 26 inch bicycle.i wanted a car that is easy to maintain and too big.avanza was consided but i did not like it asmits too high to haul my bicycle, the alza was still too small and to me expensive and not many second hands around, exora is too big for me and after browsing i think the kangoo fits my criteria,it can fit my bike with room to spare, small enyine emaning less fuel consumption and i like the 7 seater as it means its a truly multi role vehicle and also cheap not more than rm25k for 2006 models.

I plan to look atnone 2006 7 seater kangoo, may i ask when inspecting the far whatbto look out for as i know eurooean models may differ and i need to look out for critical areas to check so that i dont buy a lemon!!

  18. Good afternoon! My name is Josh. I am a foreigner and I am seriously considering the Proton Savvy as my first car here in Malaysia. I have been trying to locate a Renault Workshop within Pulau Pinang but the nearest are RS Auto and Renautech which is a four hour drive. I am just starting to familiarize myself on your roads and I think it will be better if there is a nearby workshop.

Can anyone recommend me one? Or do I have no choice but to go to RS Auto or Renautech?

    Thank you
